# RAW images
RAW refers to an image file format that captures all the data recorded by the camera's sensor without any processing or compression. A RAW file contains the full range of colors and tones captured by the camera, which allows photographers to have more control over the final image during post-processing.
When a camera takes a photo in RAW format, it saves all the information from the sensor, including brightness, color, and contrast data, as well as other image characteristics such as white balance and sharpness. This information is stored in a file without any compression or loss of quality, allowing photographers to work with the most complete data possible when editing the image.
Unlike JPEG files, which are processed by the camera's software before being saved to the memory card, RAW files require processing on a computer using specialized software, such as Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom, or Capture One. This processing involves adjusting settings like exposure, color balance, and noise reduction to create the final image.
