I've always used Shutter to capture screenshots.  For literally years now. I'm not sure which version of Ubuntu introduced this feature, obviously the PrtScn button took a **screenshot** of the entire screen but on accident I just realized that Shift + PrtScn brings up crosshairs allowing you to select an area of the screen you want captured. _Perfect._ Or maybe this is a GNOME thing? I keep forgetting I'm on Ubuntu GNOME (13.04).
